The laureates

Doctor Gafidyn R. Wesonga works in the intersection between politics and their consequences. Trans business woman, practitioner-researcher, doctor, human rights defenders, she works on health equity, reporoductive and sexual rights and health, environmental and social justice, innovation, movements construction based on the fact that equity should be codified in governance and shouldn't depend on one's will.

Graduated in medecine and surgery in Makéré University, Dr. Wesonga completed her residency in the specialized national hospital of Mulago, where she worked as an intern doctor and surgical health officer. Clinical practice confronted her to structural realities behind public health statistics and the gap between politics language and real vulnerability. Then, she joined third cycle internship program in Equity and Global Health Systems in George Washington University - AFHE, strenghtening her knowledge on health system reforms and equity/governance/leadership centered conception. These experiences allowed her to expand her actions : from patients' coverage to restructuration of the systems that determine care beneficiaries.

She founded Trans With a Mission Initiative - Uganda (ITWAL), a rural organization lead by trans and diverse people, ecofeminist, integrating environmental justice, economic automatization, and SOGIESC rights. To her, environmental durability is a governance principle, directly linked to sustenance, to social care and to physicial autonomization. As an administration council member of Tranz Network Uganda, she contributes to strategic organization and national consolidation of this transgender structure, strenghtening its sustainebility and its influence on public policies.

In National trans advocacy committee (NTAC), Gafidyn supports Ugandian Health minister on politic and clinical reforms to institutionalize inlcusive service deliveries for trans, non conforming and intersex people. Her approach is based on traduce data from communities in regulatory norms : transform testimonies into applicable directives ; moving from rhetorical inclusion to measurable compliance.
