SAMWELLY Rhobi Pristiana

Women's rights

Description

Rhobi has been campaigning for several years against sexual and genital mutilation in communities in Tanzania. In 2017, she founded Hope for Girls and Women (Matumaini kwa Wasichana na Wanawake in Swahili), an association that welcomes young women and girls who have undergone or escaped FGM on a daily basis. Determined to help and protect young girls from this violence, she has created "safe places", which allow these girls to continue their studies and escape from these practices. "I wanted the girls to have the support to say no that I never had. I wanted them to realize that they can have control over their bodies and their lives.

"Back in my home country, I'd like to put the new skills I've learned here into practice."

"The origin of my fight is my experience as a survivor."
